Inquiry about tools for cloning Jira Cloud projects to Sandbox

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for recommendations to clone entire Jira Cloud/Jira Service Management (JSM) projects to a sandbox, keeping all possible configurations (schemas, workflows, permissions, etc.). I would like the process to be as automated as possible, as I have a large number of projects, and doing it manually would be very labor-intensive.

Has anyone used a tool or method that allows efficient and complete cloning of project configurations? I would appreciate suggestions for tools or step-by-step guides to ensure that the projects are correctly replicated in the sandbox without loss of configurations.

Thanks in advance for any advice or recommendations you can offer.

Hi @Eduardo ,

Gil from Salto here.

There are third party apps that can help doing that, with Salto being one of them https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1225356/salto-configuration-manager-for-jira?tab=overview&hosting=cloud (many of our customers use us for that).

Moreover, after you bring your sandbox to a state where its configuration is representative of production, our customers would use that in order to create a proper change management pipeline where every change to the config is first implemented in a sandbox, and then properly promoted to the higher environment (and the most advanced customers would have an automated ci/cd pipeline, backed by Git to do that).

Feel free to DM or reach out to us if you're interested in hearing more.

Thanks for reaching out and for sharing this info.

It’s helpful to know that Salto can facilitate both the sandbox setup and the configuration management pipeline for changes—sounds like a solid approach, especially with the possibility of automating it through a CI/CD pipeline backed by Git.

I’ll review the details on the Marketplace page you shared, and I may reach out with more questions as I dig in further.

Appreciate the offer to connect directly; I’ll let you know if we need any additional insights.

Best!

Hello @Eduardo

Are you using a Premium subscription so that you can create Sandboxes for free? If so you can use Copying Production Data to Sandbox to copy all or selected projects to the sandbox.

There are limitations in that methodology. For example, the documentation states that data for third party apps is not copied, and Automation Rules are not copied, among other items. There is a link on the above page to another page that goes into more detail about what is and is not copied.

Hi @Eduardo,

If you're looking for a comprehensive tool to clone entire Jira projects to a sandbox with configurations, our app Deep Clone for Jira is an excellent option.

Deep Clone for Jira is designed to make cloning projects as efficient and thorough as possible, including the ability to clone issues, attachments, comments, and more.

You can clone all project elements like workflows and settings. You can read more on how to clone projects across Jira Cloud instances here.
