How to save Jira backup as CSV instead of XML?

Grace Dowling February 28, 2025

We will be migrating to a new workflow and I want to ensure we save a backup before doing so. I have tested this out by going to System -> Backup Manager -> Create backup for cloud. After doing this, I clicked "Download cloud backup," but the XML file is completely illegible. In any case, it says the Backup for server is being discontinued starting June 30, 2025, so to use CSV file import wizard. So, where do I create the CSV? I know I can use jquery and export that way, but that's not as encompassing as the current Backup Manager, so where can I do this?

Hi @Grace Dowling

There are many solutions including apps that can allow you to export your projects into CSV. However, you can look into our app Backup Projects for Jira, which allows you to export projects at intervals into a single CSV file using JQL. Then you can decide to download such a file at your convenience. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Hello @Grace Dowling

You would use issue search to export search results as CSV. Note that the issue search is limited to returning 1000 issues, so you may have to execute multiple searches to get all the issues exported.

A CSV import is limited to importing data contained in issues. You can't use the CSV import to import project configuration information like workflows, screens, permissions, etc.

Instead, you can use the CSV file import wizard to move your data from Cloud to Data Center. This option supports data such as issue data, users, and project types.
