Is there a way to collapse the Comments section? It takes up almost 1/3 of the screen. I'd much prefer to have that space for actually managing the issue I'm working on, rather than having to scroll around it.
Hi
it's a system field, so I don't think it would be possible.
An option is to request to your Jira Atlassian Admin to load a predefined Text (useful as a guide for who is working on the ticket) in the Description field with enough space in order to be able to gain the screen view, to go from this:
to this:
Hope this can help :-)

Laura
Thanks, Laura! That would be very helpful -- it would automatically expand the Description field. I typically use a manually typed Description field format when adding tickets. Do you know where in the configuration tools I would go to add pre-formatted text to my Description field configuration?

I did this in the trial version and it worked

@mahboob_sharif - You successfully added pre-formatted text to your Description field configuration? If yes, where did you go to do it?

There has been quite a lot of "spirited conversation" about this questionable feature, which Atlassian is calling "Smart Replies": https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Jira-articles/Jira-now-offers-smart-replies-in-issues/ba-p/2804797
Here is the suggestion to configure it or turn it off for a site: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JSWCLOUD-27235
Allegedly, this can be disabled, one person at a time, by turning off the "labs" feature in personal settings. Some have reported that does not work consistently for these types of experimental features.
In the interim, if your Jira Site Admin contacts Atlassian Support, they can immediately turn it off for all your users: https://support.atlassian.com/contact/#/
Kind regards,
Bill

Thank you so much @Bill Sheboy
I found the item in my personal settings and successfully turned it off -- woo hoo.
Very few of us use Jira for anything other than churning out boatloads of work. I find all of Atlassian's 'gamifying' attempts questionable, and they spark much 'spirited conversation' in my own head as I waste far too much time trying to beat back the noise it all generates.
Do you know if I can quell the obnoxious 'Spark a Conversation' banner that was recently introduced (see screenshot above)? More wasted real estate getting in my way.

For my test site with Free license, that message seems paired to the "Smart Replies" feature. I recommend disabling all the "lab" features, logging out, clear your browser cache, close all the browsers, and open / login to see if it vanishes.

That did it. Noise reduction is a top priority these days, and I can't thank you enough for your help.

The proposed fix doesn't work for me. Even if the description is several screens long, the comments section still takes up 1/3 of the screen. I really hope this isn't a long-term change.

Hi @JJ Chritton
Have you tried to disable the Jira Labs options in your personal settings?
If instead your teams want this turned off for the entire site, have you worked with your Jira Site Admin to submit a request to Atlassian Support to turn this feature off?
Kind regards,
Bill

Disabling the lab sections helps because it reduces the overall size of the comments section in proportion to the rest of the page, but it remains in an "always-on-top" status.

Perhaps check with Atlassian Support to learn if it can be changed.
