Chain of multiple approvals?

I'm trying to create a workflow that must have different parts approved in sequential order. Generally: A request is submitted, one group must approve something, it must go to a different group to be approved, etc. before being implemented. I don't want other groups being given the option to approve without the group before them approving. Is this feature possible?

I guess the easiest way of accomplishing this is to set up a workflow with dedicated status for each (group) approval required. So you might have a status called Waiting for formal approval and set up the approval in the workflow configuration. Next to the approved transition you have the next status called Waiting for technical approval which, again, you set up as an approval using add approval in the diagram view of the workflow configuration.
