Can JIRA notify email list?

Matis Aas September 17, 2019

Hello everyone!

I have a question regarding how JIRA deals with email lists. We've set up an internal Service Desk project for our company and would like JIRA to send notifications about tickets to an email list, but JIRA doesn't seem to be able to pull it off, is this expected?

Thank you in advance,
Matis

You want to be careful with using mailing lists as users, particularly with service desk, as you can end up with cases where users are getting notified about an issue via the list, but don't actually have permission to view it, so when they try to click on the links in the email, they get nothing. That is why you are better off using notification schemes/rules to send to groups, as jira will expand the group and send only to the users who have permission to see the issue

That said, there are at least 2 apps that can help with this.

JEMH - https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/4832/enterprise-mail-handler-for-jira-jemh?hosting=cloud&tab=overview

Bug Watcher Notifications - https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1210865/bug-watcher-notifications?hosting=server&tab=overview

Hi @Matis Aas

We have setup internal Jira users with an email address for a mailing list and this works for us.

A secondary question would how you would identify this user avoiding hard coding if possible.

And where you would trigger the email.

We use Automation to set Request Participants based on component
