task/Subtask not transitioning independently

Sam Smith February 27, 2024

I have created EPIC with tasks and tasks with subtask.  On the board, the epic and tasks are moving simultaneously instead of independently.  When I drag, a tasks or subtask, the corresponding EPIC or tasks moves as well.

Is there a way to drag them independently?

Thank you,

Hi Sam - Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

That's probably because the Jira Work Management boards can not be customized much and don't have as much functionality as Jira Software boards. That being said, you can create a second board that would hopefully provide that functionality. Here is an article that will help guide you on how to do that if you are interested:

Thanks John,

Thanks for providing the resource for the board.  I am working on both recommendations   Thanks again.

Hi @Sam Smith ,

I suspect that someone has set up an automation rule that causes this behavior. In fact, it is a common request of other community members to have the parent follow the child. As a result, the typical suggestion is to create an automation rule to do just that. I would check under project settings/automation and inspect the rules. There may be a global rule set up for this in fact.

Hi Jack,

Thank you for the quick response.  I will look for a global rule and update here if that was the issue.

Thanks again,

It may not be global but just a project specific one.
