Time tracking in Story from Tasks and Sub-tasks

Brenda Jacomy April 13, 2018

I need  for the Story to track the time needed to complete the Tasks and Sub tasks I created for these issues but it seems impossible. I spent 2 hours already trying to find an answer within the Atlassian Community. Does anyone can provide with a way to make this simple request happen? I think JIRA needs some PM's helping to create these tools!

Hi @Brenda Jacomy,

Just to clarify; you would like one Story to have Tasks and Sub-tasks assigned to it, those Tasks and Sub-tasks have estimates on them, and you would like the total estimate on the Story?

If this is correct, JIRA is not able to do this since Tasks and Stories are on the same level within the issue hierarchy of JIRA.

You could however set up a filter that captures all the Tasks & Sub-tasks that you are interested in (perhaps by a Version number), and set up a Time Tracking Report for that filter.

There are also a number of Time tracking plugins on the Atlassian Marketplace that may fit your requirements better.

Hope this helps

Hi Danny: Thanks for your help, since I am managing a multilevel project (5 in total) I had no other choice than creating Epics then Stories and then linking these tasks and subtasks and Bugs to the Stories. I searched all over the community and I wasn't able to find another way to create these levels. Please let me know if you have a better option.

I estimated each task in hours but these hours are not being summarized under the Stories.  If I add the total time based on the tasks to the stories then my epic will show a sum of everything which it is incorrect. Based on what I read so far, I am not the only one looking to get this simple request solved.

Hi @Brenda Jacomy,

If the solution is to view all issues within an Epic and their time estimates I would look into the following, as Epics do not summarise the total time of issue linked to them:

Portfolio for JIRA Atlassian JIRA plugin

Epic Sum Up or Structure Plugins

Tempo's Timesheet Report using a filter that looks for only issue linked to the Epic.

On a separate note, time is not summarised when linking an issue. Instead time is summarised when creating a Sub-task on a standard issue type, e.g. Task, Story, Bug, Epic. Unfortunately, Issues in an Epic do not contribute to the summarised time. I completely agree, I would also like this feature on Epics also.

Hope this helps

Thanks Danny! I'm already using Structure Plugin.
