The default link definitions are intended to be used in sentences, and should not need any explanation (to an English speaker anyway).

Try adding issues to them:

ABC-123 relates to DEF-456

ABC-123 is blocked by DEF-456

DEF-456 blocks ABC-123

and so-on

You can define your own link types, and if you do, my advice would be to use the same linguistic construct - try it in a sentence.

You will notice that they are directional - they show you which issue does something - the three examples I gave are actually only of two issue link types.  The second and third could be the same link, viewed from either end.
