I want to setup jira of a team of 25 users. I was checking this link: https://www.atlassian.com/licensing/server/pricing-change#jirafamily-1 to see the pricing, there its mentioned license pricing is 2000$ and renewal price is 1000$. Also when I check the purchase page(https://www.atlassian.com/purchase/product/jira-software) I have option to buy maintenance for upto 3 years by paying an additional 2000$ during which period I will get all updates and product support.

This is clear, but I would like to know what happens

  1. If I buy new license for a year and then it expires - will jira stop working or is it just that it works but I won’t get any new updates and support as mentioned in this link: https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Jira-questions/What-happens-if-JIRA-Server-license-expires/qaq-p/587267
  2. If license expires and then later on say after a few months I need to renew the license for a year, then do I need to pay the new license fee of $2000 or a renewal fee of $1000?
  3. If I need to increase the number of users from 25 to a higher number later on while my license and maintenance is still valid(say 6 months after the new license purchase), do I need to pay only the difference amount or do I need to pay the whole amount or is the calculation done differently? If so could you explain how its done.

and also I want to clarify, In one document they said renewal amount of jira license is 1000$ and another document renewal amount of maintenance is 1000$, so I need to pay both the renewal amounts? or renewing the software license by giving 1000 $ means which includes the maintenance? or not?

You have not read this properly.

The licence is "perpetual", Jira will work after the licence expires.  But you will not be able to upgrade to versions released after your licence expires and you are not supported.

You can renew at any time after expiry, but you have to renew from the end of the last licence, not the point at which you renew.  If your licence has been expired for over a year, renewals are not worth it, just buy a new licence.

The money you've paid for the 25 is taken account of in the new costs, although you will usually buy a year at the higher tier and extend the old licence to cover it.

Thank you Nic for the answer.

I have a case: If we did not renew maintenance for more than a year, as you suggested, it is better to buy new licenses, but what happen with the old ones? If they are named licenses, do we lose history?

Hi Nic,

We have missed to renew the license for 1 year and it was advised to go for a new license instead of renewal which was cost effective. but i have some plugins in my existing license, whether i need to procure all the plugins again .

Yes, you will need to pay for everything you are using again.
