Is there a way to show the components as a tree in JIRA?

We have about 300 components in our system and it is really hard to organize them. I'd like to have a hierarchy view of the components in JIRA in which you click on the subsystem name and then you select the component. Can it be done in JIRA? Is there an add-on for it?

Not natively.  JIRA's components are a flat, per-project list.

But, have a look at https://marketplace.atlassian.com/plugins/net.brokenbuild.subcomponents/server/overview - I suspect that covers most, if not all, of what you're looking for here.
