Is it possible to automatically set certain custom fields to certain values based on the user?

I would like to set custom fields to certain values based on the the assignee (or, potentially, the reporter). What is the best way to go about doing this?

i think the best way of doing it is to first get script runner plugin and then write a post function as a custom script.
