I am of course referring to this "update": Swimlanes & group-by for Jira business boards
We are very disappointed by this change. This impacts our teams that were using the Group By Category feature on the JWM boards.
It's really really difficult to manage the Categories in this layout. Dragging cards up and down swimlanes is not ideal; the automatic scrolling makes this near impossible. Going into each card and changing the field manually makes what was once a very quick and painless process now lengthy and, frankly, annoying.
Is there any hope on the horizon for us?
Hi @Jeremiah ,
There is currently no setting to restore the previous horizontal Group by Category layout. The swimlane design was an intentional Jira Cloud change, rolled out to all Business boards, and the current board documentation only describes Category grouping through swimlanes.
Atlassian has said that broader board configurability may be considered in the future, but there is no published commitment or timeline for restoring this specific behavior. The most direct route is the feedback button in Jira’s horizontal navigation, which the product announcement identifies as the channel for sending feedback to the product team. I would include the automatic scrolling, difficulty moving cards between distant categories, and the need for a collapse-all option.
As a temporary workaround, use the List view, add the Category column, and edit category values directly in the rows where your permissions allow it. This does not reproduce the old board interaction, but it avoids opening every work item individually. See the swimlanes announcement and the Category options in the List view.
