Inserting a smart value as default value to custom field

Hello!

I am looking for a way to show the number of comments in the issue in queue view.

I am thinking about adding a custom field, then adding automation that would populate the field whenever there is a new comment with smart value {{issue.comments.size}}.

Perhaps, there is a more efficient, straightforward approach than mine?

There is nothing delivered that can do this.  The solution you provided sounds like a good path to get the information you are after displayed in the queue.
