When using trac, I'd commonly set up a list of tickets that would be grouped by one of the fields (e.g. Type, Status, Developer). In other words, it displayed a break in the list with a sub-heading for each new value of that field.
How do I do this in JIRA?

you can create a report from the project page: "Single Level Group By Report".
That should do what you want.
