How do you add preview functionality to a custom field?

I have created a custom field of type "Text Field (multi-line)". The field is called Developer Notes.

On other fields, I've seen the ability to preview a text box before clicking the check mark to accept any edited changes that were made. This is very useful when applying Jira's markup language.

How do i add this button to my custom field?

Example of the button I want, and my custom field where its missing:

You've got that text field set to "plain text", so there's nothing to actually preview, as it's not going to take any formatting.

Go into the field configuration for the project/issue type, find the field and change its "renderer" from plain text to rich/wiki, the preview button will now appear.

Thank you Nic, that's exactly what I needed to do!
