Can I auto populate a custom field based on the customer creating the request?

I want to add a custom field called department in the issue type and based on the reporter (and which team he is in), I'd like to be able to auto populate the department field. Is this a viable option?

Take a look at Automation. After the issue has been created you can update a field based on some conditions.
