I have a service desk set up for a team that when a ticket is created, it clones the ticket in a software project.
I'm also looking to see if it's possible that if they comment on the ticket in the software project, if I can automate those same comments in the service desk ticket?

I would recommend you to try to use the add-on Automation Lite for JIRA to perform this action.
Using it, you can create an automation that will execute when an issue have an comment added and verify the linked issue and post the same comment.
