New Feature: Formula Custom Fields in Jira Cloud!

Hey everyone,

Kendra here, I'm a Product Manager on Jira! I’m excited to share that we are rolling out a new Formula Custom Field in Jira Cloud.

We know many teams need flexible ways to run calculations in Jira, for various use cases whether it be for risk ratings, cost calculations, summing effort, estimating dates, assessing business impact, and more.

Formula Fields will display dynamic, calculated values directly within a Jira Work Item.

How Formula Fields work

  • Formula will be a new custom field type in Jira.

  • These can be created and edited by:

    • Space admins in team-managed spaces

    • Jira admins in company-managed spaces

  • This feature will be available for Software, Business and Service spaces (and is currently being explored for Discovery spaces).

  • Once you create a formula field, its output type cannot be changed.

    • For example, you can’t change a formula from a number output to a text output. To do that, you’ll need to create a new formula field.

  • We’re launching this feature as an open beta, and moving to GA once formula fields are supported in JQL search in Spring 2026.

Things to know about Formula Fields

  • Formula Fields are read-only

    • They calculate values but can’t be edited directly.

  • Formula Fields can reference other custom fields associated with the work item and/or integers.

  • The scope of a formula will be within a single work item.

    • Formulas cannot be run across work items.

    • For example, you can’t roll up the estimated effort of all tasks to the parent using a formula field.

  • We'll be adding functionality shortly that when enabled, Rovo can help you:

    • Generate formulas from a natural language prompt

    • Suggest corrections for syntax errors

Rollout timeline

We’ll roll out formula fields progressively as we add more capabilities. Timelines below are indicative only and subject to change.

Rolling out in December 2025

  • Support in team-managed spaces only (for Business, Software, and Service spaces).

  • Inputs: number custom fields (including story points) and integers.

  • Support for mathematical operators and functions.

  • Numeric outputs that can be formatted as numbers, currency, or percentages.

  • Outputs visible on work items and in the All work view.

Early Spring 2026 (~March 2026)

  • Support in team-managed spaces only (for Business, Software, and Service spaces).

  • New inputs: Date/time, Priority, Select (including checkboxes), Labels, Categories, and Short text fields.

  • Support for Date/time, text, and logical functions.

  • Support for Date/time and text outputs.

  • Output visible on the board view (on board cards).

Late Spring (~April 2026)

  • Support in company-managed spaces (for Business, Software, and Service spaces).

  • All capabilities from deliverables one and two extended to company-managed spaces.

During the first half of 2026, we will also add:

  • Support for using formula fields in JQL search.

  • Support in the List view in Plans.

  • Duration outputs for formulas (for example, calculating the time between two dates or times).

I hope you’re as excited as I am for this release!

Please let me know if you have any questions or feedback on what I've outlined above. I'll continue to post updates on this feature as we roll out.

@Kendra Fales

This is a wonderful addition!

I have a few questions:

  1. Can you provide a more detailed timeline of when this open beta will deploy to various systems? Is it going out based on subscription plans?
  2. Where can we find documentation for the formula syntax and available functions?
  3. In my One Atlassian environment deployed in mid November I see a field type named "Custom Formula" is already available for JPD. What is the impact to that field type with this new "Formula" field being rolled out potentially to JPD spaces?

Hi @Kendra Fales Same question as @Trudy Claspill What's the difference between JPD's "Custom Formula" field and the "Formula" field currently being explored for Discovery spaces?

@Kendra Fales same questions and interest - we use JPD calculations, but definitely a need in software

@Kendra Fales This is great news.

Our primary use case would be the calculate the sum of values from form fields. I know your design supports this working with custom fields, but many of the items we would like to use this with are for items (for example, items on an invoice) that aren't recorded as a custom field but are instead are displayed on a request. We'd love to see this dynamically sum up the value of the form fields. Is this possible with your implementation or included in the scope of this request?

@Kendra Fales

1. Will these custom calculation fields also apply to Jira Service Management Spaces and not just Jira Software Spaces?

2. Will these be able to be queried in Automation? (Example: WHEN calculation refreshes, IF calculation number is less than X, THEN do Y)

3. Will this field type also be available to be viewed and/or used in Assets and Plans?

Community what use cases do you see your companies use this for? We are looking for ideas on what others will be using this for.

Thanks @Kendra Fales and Atlassian! Really looking forward to seeing the potential here!

Ditto to most questions already posted ... but one I would really love is "Formulas cannot be run across work items" - i have 1 example where we have a count for lets say a field 'number of X's' across various work items and I want to dynamically show the total (even if it is on all of those work items). eg ticket A-1 has 'number of X' value of 3, A-2 has 'number of X' value of 8 and A-3 has 'number of X' value of 3 and so, A-1, A-2 and A-3 all have a field 'total for X' showing 14 (if it is a sum and it updates real time) - I can easily do that with automation but should this not be something introduced with this?

Thanks, Yatish.

👋 Rounding up everyone's questions so far!

Can you provide a more detailed timeline of when this open beta will deploy to various systems? Is it going out based on subscription plans?
We roll out progressively to organizations to ensure stability. I can’t share specifics of when it’ll hit various organizations but it will rollout to all licence editions and site this week. If you are on bundled release tracks, it will be available in the coming months
Where can we find documentation for the formula syntax and available functions?
We’ll have support documentation covering this out shortly! I’ll post back once it’s available
In my One Atlassian environment deployed in mid November I see a field type named "Custom Formula" is already available for JPD. What is the impact to that field type with this new "Formula" field being rolled out potentially to JPD spaces?
These are separate for JPD. They will remain should you choose to keep them. The new Custom Formula Field will operate slightly differently, Loretta has shared more here: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRACLOUD-61966?focusedId=3718862&page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels%3Acomment-tabpanel#comment-3718862 I’ll also share back the support documentation outlining more details  shortly!
The "Formula" field currently being explored for Discovery spaces? Will these custom calculation fields also apply to Jira Service Management Spaces and not just Jira Software Spaces?
JPD teams are exploring this feature for discovery projects!
And yes, the Formula Custom Field will be available in field configuration for work items in service spaces.
Will these be able to be queried in Automation? (Example: WHEN calculation refreshes, IF calculation number is less than X, THEN do Y)

This will be available to be queried in automations like other custom fields when we release the JQL search support is available in later Spring (Aiming for April 2026)

Will this field type also be available to be viewed and/or used in Assets and Plans?

We plan to support the field in list in Plans in ~April (but this is subject to change)

As for Assets we don't have plans to currently support this, but we'll send this feedback on to the appropriate team — can you share more about your use case?

Will this field type available on forms ?

I don't have exact use cases yet as we are not using Assets at this time, but I could see stakeholders wanting to do calculations for [number of stock] * [cost of item] or more advanced calculations such as, [current stock] - [needed stock] * [cost of item] to get additional budget calculations and even potentially sending that via automation to a leader or finance team member for approval.

This will certainly be a great help in the day-to-day operations of areas that need more flexibility in Jira.
