New Feature: Formula Custom Fields in Jira Cloud!

Love this feature, but it does not seem to be working for any type of Date fields.  I have tried about 10 different combinations and the one's suggested by Rovo but nothing is working. Assume it may be a bug of some type.

Just found this article - Great idea but I can't find these formula fields anywhere in our Jira cloud sandbox environment which is on a continuous track. The option to create a new formula field is only for JPD right now, was the rollout for company managed software, business and service projects delayed?

Thanks!

Hi @Kendra F_ - is there any update on the company-managed spaces side?

Thanks in advance!

@Germán Idoate and @Josh : Looks like this is in production for company-managed projects. See the announcement here.

Hello, we would like to start using this feature in company managed spaces.  Is it available yet?

I'm not able to find it yet on any site I have access to, regardless of the release track and the rollout schedule stating otherwise.

To everyone who's looking for the feature in company-managed projects (especially @Thorsten Letschert _Decadis AG_ , @Gena Welk , @Germán Idoate , ...) - you have to enable the new formula field in the beta features section of the project:

Can confirm it's visible and working in company project on a test environment. Make sure your organization has Beta features turned on in the Org Admin panel first.

@Kendra F_

For example, you can’t roll up the estimated effort of all tasks to the parent using a formula field.

When will we be able to do this easily? Total expected effort and completion % by story points would unlock so much for my teams.

@Kendra F_ do you have a public roadmap for further development of the Jira Formula custom field type? We are currently using a great app for the same use case which also supports cross-ticket calculations, formatting, etc. and it would be helpful to know whether the same sort of scope is planned for the Jira Formula custom field or whether it is supposed to remain more like a general solution for basic calculations but not grow far beyond that?

Hi!

I was excited about these feature as need it for some of my projects and...

I have enabled the custom formula field with beta release but still when want to create it there is and error that it can only be used in Product Jira Discovery.

Does it mean that for software and business projects it is not available? :/

🚀 Update: Formula Fields are moving to General Availability!

Hi everyone,

Thank you so much for your incredible feedback during open beta! I’m excited to share that Formula Fields are moving to General Availability (GA) as part of the Lamington Season Release (July 13-26, 2026).

What’s changed since our last update (from Beta → GA):

  • Feature is ON by default: No more admin opt-in via the Beta Features toggle.

  • Full space support: Formula fields are now available in both team-managed and company-managed spaces.

  • Expanded Output Types: In addition to numbers, we now support text, date, and duration outputs.

  • JQL Search & Sort: You can now search for calculated values directly in JQL (e.g., Variance > 100) and use them in dashboard gadgets.

  • Rovo AI Integration: Use natural language to generate or fix your formulas.

Note: A couple of capabilities including cross work item rollups and select field references in formulas are not part of this GA release.

👉 For the full details on everything included in GA, check out our new announcement post

Thank you!

I haven't been able to find this feature anywhere, as this is being rolled out as a general feature by the 26th I assume I'll just need to wait for another 3 days to finally get it

While you wait for GA, enable this from Top Right Corner > Gear Icon > System > Beta Features and then goto fields > Create New Field > Formula

@Kendra F_ @Esha Gajula

Can we get support for JSM SLA customfields to work within this formula field - Trying to calculate date diff between an SLA field and the 'due date' field and was hoping this would work for that - Seems to an easier way then having to use an automation rule.

Thanks!
