Jira Image of the Day: Workflow Diagram Details

567140e4-7160-4e5f-bfb1-0b53362adfda.png

Concept Relates To

Application Type

Jira (Jira Work Management and Jira Software), Jira Service Management, Jira Core

Deployment Type

Jira Cloud, Jira Server, Jira Data Center

What is shown?

The same simple workflow, drawn three different ways.

Visit: Admin > Work items > Workflows

What can we learn?

It doesn’t matter if your diagram is drawn vertically or horizontally or differently. All three of the examples above represent the exact same workflow.

My advice? Always try to present workflow diagrams in the way that is easiest for your users to understand. However you decide to draw and organize the elements, try to be consistent. Users will recognize a pattern and will appreciate a standard.

Tip: After making workflow changes, always check the workflow diagram. You may need to reorder statuses, align statuses, or improve transition start and end points.

Have examples of well-drawn workflows? Please share your screenshots!

Thanks for your article, @Rachel Wright

Yes, and...I wish the workflow editor had organize / layout / validate features to help.  It seems the guidance from Atlassian is to create / plan non-trivial flows outside the tool and then draw them inside.

Kind regards,
Bill

Rachel, what do you feel about the idea of only ever using global transitions and then put the conditional logic inside conditions, to control which status can transition to which other status? That does avoid the tedious work of drawing all the transition arrows
