Hi,
Is it possible to add a field to the Log Work form, that indicates the type of work that was performed on an issue. For example, the type of work could be Plan, Design, Develop, Maintenance, etc.
The type for this would be used by our accounting department to figure out which type of work is to be capitalized and which not.
Tzvetan
I think this is not possible presently in jira.
you see

Or you can try Tempo as Bjarni suggested in the other answer.

Hi, we {end2end} developed a new Jira server worklog related app 'Worklog express' so you can give it a try (Please note that I’m one of the folks behind Worklog express, but this interpretation of Jira worklogging should help you resolve described problems):

You can define your own worklog types, mark them as billable or non-billable, apply worklog type schemes to assign set of worklog types to defined projects. You can also find project reports and raw data excel exports which can help you getting raw data for later reporting.

@Tzvetan Horozov It's a long shot, but did you ever find a solution to this? You've described exactly what my company needs--just a simple dropdown to categorize work done under a story. Have looked into several plugins but no one seems to offer this... I'm really surprised it isn't offered out of the box.

Hi @Tzvetan Horozov,
The key question is, how would you like to use the "work type"? Generate reports, group by work type in a timesheet, anything else?
Jira does not support the work type so even if plugin reports it somewhere, built-in Jira reports won't show it. The plugin would need not only to save work type but also give you the reporting capabilities that you need.
Let us know more details so we might think about adding it to the Clockwork app.
Thanks,
Jack
