How to set the defect status as in progress

I raise a defect in JIRA, and the defect LC should be open->in progress->resolved

I can set the defect status as resolved, but I can't set the status as in progress, how to do that?

it seems condition has added on Start Progress(In Progress) workflow action most probably assisgnee can move it to In Progress state, check with your project lead about permissions for workflow actions

If you have the right permission to view the workflow (it's a link underneath the status in the standard issue view), then that could help you see how you get into "in progress". But you'll still need to check with an admin to find out what "conditions" there might be on any transition from "open" to "in progress"
