Can I change the default value for "viewable by" field when adding a comment?

I've seen another post all about adding java scipts and transitions screens, etc. But for the novice user, isn't there jsut a way to set the default to a particular internal user group?

No, I'm afraid not.

That's why you've found people using the last resort of javascript (believe me, with Atlassian products, javascript should only be used when you can't do it any other way)
