re-index project in the new Jira UI

It's not clear how to reindex a project in the new Jira User Interface.

Can the documentation please but updated.

(Maybe it's not possible now?)

When trying to link an issue searching by text is not working, - only by Jira ID.  I was hoping that a reindex might fix this but can't work out how to reindex in the new UI

That does not sound like a broken index. 

You can test this though - pick an issue you want to link to and edit it.  Add a , or . to the summary or description.  Are you able to search for it in the link screen now?  If you can, then yes, its indexing.  If you still can't, then it's not the indexing.

The function was removed in Atlassian's recent release. With the new JIRA experience all JIRA Software Cloud instances will do an auto reindex without any effort from the user.

Hmm okay so maybe I need to raise a ticket saying our site is not being re-indexed.  Thanks

Trying to re-index? Good news! Jira now re-indexes sites and projects automatically, so indexing and re-indexing have been removed. We're rolling out this change gradually, so you might still see them for awhile.
