Why do images in comments display as !image.png|thumbnail|?

We're running Jira Data Center 9.12.12 with Jira Service Management 5.12.12.

When a user adds a comment containing an image, the image is added to the attachment list but the comment itself contains the text "!image.jpg!" or "!image.jpg|thumbnail!". The images aren't displayed inline in the comments.

The comment field is a wiki-style renderer.

Is there anyway to get images displaying inline in the comments?

To duplicate:

1. In the comment box, click "Attachments" > "Browse"

2. Select an image (png, jpg or gif) to attach

3. Click "Add"

Observe that the image is not displayed. Instead the name of the image is enclosed in exclaimation marks. The image is displayed in the attachments area.

Hello @Helen I had the exact same problem and Atlassian support resolved it for me.

The setting that needed to be changed was in System -> General Settings -> Internet Explorer MIME Sniffing Security Hole Workaround Policy.

By default it was set to Secure: forced download of attachments for all browsers, which causes the issue.

You can switch to the other 2 settings and attachments will show up correctly.

As a sidenote, this setting has to do with Internet Explorer 7 vulnerability, which is not supported anymore so if your company is not using it, it shoulnd't pose any security threat.

Kind regards,

Thank you Jan! I also contacted Atlassian support and received the same advice. I didn't think to come back and update this question, so thank you for responding.

This is what the desired functionality looks like in Jira Software 9.12.2 (Server):
