User picker error when creating new story

I just started a new next-gen project in preparation to move my team into Jira for our sprint tracking. Right now the permissions are locked down to just me and the lead dev (both as admins).

When I create a new story, being sure to fill out all required fields, and selecting myself for both Assignee and Reporter fields, I receive this message:

"Reviewer: User '[deleted username]' is not valid for this user picker."

Where the [deleted username] is from an old project that also no longer exists. There are no other user pickers on the form. I have no custom fields on stories, just the defaults.

Any thoughts?

Hi Ben, 

Bit late but it might help others. Issue might be with disabled user used as default value within your jira. Head to the mentioned field and clean him from defaults.

This is exactly the case we had.  Just to clarify: A custom field with a Global/All Issue Types context was set with a default value with a user who was disabled.  Changing the default value to none (or empty or no default value) fixed the problem.  Thanks for the earlier response!
