User Picker pop up for Assignee

On a typical user picker field there is the 'Select a user(s)' button when choosing the user which brings up a page where I can view all users by group and then pick the correct user.

Why is there no 'Select a user(s)' button for the Assignee?

I need this functionality for the Assignee field, so people can choose the assignee based on the group. Is it possible to can add that button for the assignee field?

I would create a custom field to use instead of the assignee field, but I still need the functionality to assign the assignee to the component lead if a component is chosen. Otherwise, I want people to see a 'Select a user(s)' type list to choose the Assignee.

Unfortunately, this is currently not possible in JIRA.

There is a feature request open for this though:

I would recommend you to vote on that feature to increase its visibility with our developers.
