User Directory sync in JIRA Data Center

I am curious how the User Directory sync works in Data Center, We are running a 4 node cluster and I am playing around with the polling intervals but I don't get it how it works.

If I set this to e.g. 30 minutes, will any of the nodes pick this up and run a sync when the clock hits 30 min? Is it random which node carrying out this sync?

When I look at the User Directories in the admin UI on one node and it is Synchronizing, does that mean that it is the node I am currently attached to that is running the sync or can it be a different node? If so, is there any way I can see which node is carrying out the sync?

The reason I am so curious about this is that sometimes it seems that the polling frequency is not respected. Even though it has passed more than 30 minutes the UI tells me that the Sync completed successfully for more than 30 minutes ago.

Is this text string only the half truth? Can it be another node that is doing the sync and it is not reflected on the node I am accessing the admin UI from.

I have searched the docu but haven't found anything describing how DC handles this.

Any input is highly appreciated!
