I'm using Jira Service Desk and I'd like to know if there's any difference between the customers that are displayed in this option:
and the users with the Service Desk Customers role in the People option:

You manage the project roles under People like who would be your agent, project admin, customers and so on. The permission schemes define what these roles can do in the project.
Under Customers you can view the list of customers along with the organisations.

With respect to customers list it remains same for customers and Service Desk customer role.
From customers tab you create organisation for customers and invite new customers.
From People tab , you manage the roles based on permission scheme.
