I want to delete an organization but I cannot do that. There is a subscription which I first need to delete. It's a free subscription but it is impossible to delete that one. The instructions by Atlassian won't succed because there is no option to delete.

How do I delete a free subscription (there is only one present), so I can delete an organization.

Please help!

I had a similar issue with some free test instances. I started cleaning them up about 3-4 months ago, and I believe there was some information about the time required for app/product subscriptions to end.

When I was doing this cleanup, for all the 'not removable' instances, I renamed them with the prefix '[x] - '.

and @Roeland Möller thanks for the reminder! I've already removed 2 out of 10 without any problems - 8 more to go!

Hi @Roeland Möller

You can try to Delete the Free Subscription by the following steps, hope it helps:

  1. Log in to Atlassian Admin Console:

    • Go to the Atlassian Admin Console.
    • Make sure you're logged in with the admin account that manages the organization and subscription.
  2. Check Subscription Details:

    • In the Admin Console, navigate to Billing > Manage Subscriptions.
    • Find the free subscription listed there.
  3. Verify Subscription:

    • Free subscriptions usually don't have a direct "Delete" button.
    • Atlassian may require you to either:
      • Switch to another plan (even if it's still a free plan).
      • Cancel your subscription (in case it’s a trial).
  4. Cancel Subscription:

    • If the system doesn't allow you to directly delete the subscription, look for an option to cancel or downgrade the subscription.
    • For most free plans, the cancellation process is handled in the subscription section, where it may ask you to confirm the cancellation of the service.
  5. Check for Active Users or Products:

    • If any users are assigned to the free subscription or any products are still active, you may need to deactivate them first.
    • Ensure there are no ongoing user assignments or active products linked to your subscription.

After these steps you should be able to delete the organization.

Thanks for your answer but it's not how it works.

When I manage the Free subscription, Jira says, Your instance is deactivated. But when I want to delete te organization, I first have to remove al subscriptins?????? and the button delete organization is grayd out.

I can follow your instruction but it doesn't solve my problem. Schermafbeelding 2025-01-10 082000.pngSchermafbeelding 2025-01-10 082417.png

If you're unable to delete the organization because the "Delete Organization" button is grayed out and it's tied to a free subscription, here’s an approach that may help:

1. Check the Subscription Status:

  • If your Jira instance is deactivated, this may be causing the "Delete Organization" option to be inactive. It’s important to ensure that the subscription is fully canceled.
  • For a free subscription, even when deactivated, it might still exist in Atlassian’s system and prevent the organization deletion.

2. Try Reactivating the Instance First:

  • Reactivate the instance temporarily from the Atlassian Admin Console, if possible. This could give you access to the subscription settings and allow you to cancel the subscription properly.
  • Once the instance is reactivated, you should be able to manage and cancel the subscription (or downgrade if needed).

3. Manually Remove the Subscription:

  • Navigate to Admin Console > Billing > Manage Subscriptions.
  • Try to cancel the subscription directly from there if the option is offered (even if it's free).

4. Reach Out to Atlassian Support:

If the “Delete Organization” button is still grayed out after ensuring the subscription is canceled or removed, contact Atlassian support. It might require them to clear the subscription from their system or manually assist with the deletion.

hmmm First I need to add billing details.

Man....... I only want to delete organization which only have been used as a test. There is no data, no users, no whatever. Why it's not possible to just delete the things. Atlassian makes it so difficult and not user friendly.

And...... It's not possible to add billing details to deactivated subscriptions because they are not in the licenses list on my.atlassian.com anymore.

Activating is not possible

Isn't it better to contact Atlassian and ask if they can delete those subscriptions. Then I can also tell them right away that this is a hopeless way of working
