Recovering Lost Custom Field Data After Moving Issues from Team-Managed to Company-Managed Project

Gregory October 8, 2024

Hello everyone,

We recently moved issues from a team-managed project to a company-managed project in JIRA Cloud.

Unfortunately, some of the fields in the team-managed project were custom fields that did not exist in the company-managed project, resulting in the loss of valuable information during the move.

We are  wondering if there is any way to recover the lost data from the JIRA backup Cloud solution or through any other method.

I understand that custom fields might not be directly transferable, but I am hoping there might be a way to retrieve the lost information.

Any guidance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Gregory

Hi @Gregory

You can initiate a data restoration from a Cloud Backup.

There are some important considerations to properly understand backup availability policies from the backup services:

  • If a backup was created less than 14 days ago, it should still be available in Atlassian's internal storage.

  • Alternatively, if you have previously downloaded a backup file to your local system after creating the backup, you can use this to restore your data.

Please refer to the respective documentation for detailed instructions on how to proceed with restoring your data based on the scenario that applies to you. Please note that restoring data will erase any information that was created after the backup was taken.

Backups older than 14 days are marked as expired in Atlassian storage and can't be restored directly from there. However, if you have a local copy of such a backup, it can still be used.

Another solution is to restore the data in a different instance by creating a new cloud instance. You can then use CSV to export/import the field into the newly migrated issues.

I hope this helps

Best regards

Sam

Hi Sam,

Thank you for you detailed response and guidance.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find any backups on our environment.

Given the situation we decided to rewrite the stories that were affected, and we will be careful to export a backup in CSV next time !

Thank you once again for your assistance

Best regards,

Gregory

Hi @Gregory

I always recommend taking a Jira Cloud Backup before any major changes in the instance.
