Number of Issue/Task Types

Lauren Moat December 31, 2024

I'm trying to create a new issue type (task) to my project - but it's greyed out and wont let me?

Any reasons for this? Is there a maximum number you can create as it only lets me when i delete an existing one. whats the workaround for this ?

Hi @Lauren Moat,

I am not aware of any limitation on the number of issue types available to a project (the only one I do know is that you can only have 1 sub-task issue type in team managed projects, but it does not look as if that's what you are looking at).

Could you provide a bit more details: what type of project are you trying to add an issue type to (team or company managed)? From what screen are you trying to do this (great if you could share a screenshot)? Do you have the necessary permissions?

Hey Walter, thanks for your response

its team managed project.

will attach screenshot below where you can see its greyed out

I do also have necessary permissions, as i create them all - but can only create a new one when ones deleted

Sorry to keep asking additional questions, but based on the issue types I see there it does not look like Jira (Software). Is this a business project? JSM? Just trying to reproduce this and I don't see the same limitation in any project I have in my test instance ...

Hey Walter thats ok - it is a business project board.

Oh ... bumped into a documented limitation: you can create up to 30 issue types in a team managed project, as it seems from this support article:

I don't know if you did indeed go that wild? 😛 - I had not bumped into that limitation anytime before ...

Hey - ah thanks !

Yes I have just counted and including 'epic' there are 30 issue types! Unfortunately we do need more as we are a big business covering many different areas and a variety of tasks in our team !

Is there any way there could be work done to increase this ? If not i may need to explore other platforms 🙈

As you mention, it is quite normal to have a lot of different types of work / tasks in a business. It is - however - not so normal to organise all that work in a single project. If you could set up a couple of different projects around functional areas of your business, you should quite easily be able to overcome that limitation.

I am using Jira (first on prem and on cloud for the last couple of years) and help companies of all sizes and industries implement the tool and don't think I've ever seen a team use 30 different issue types in a single project. Just saying that separating stuff out is a very (and more) common approach.
