Migration of JIRA cloud to datacenter server

lovisharma October 29, 2018

Hi,

We are planning to migrate JIRA cloud to datacenter application.

Would like to have a check whether will have any data loss related to user management or on access control after doing the migration.

Data loss related to projects , comments or description related to the issues or on the state of the issues.

Could anyone please confirm on it so that we could initiate the plan.

Thanks

Hi @lovisharma, there are two different things here:

  • User management: it depends on the access method you are using now and will use, is it via Google or Jira Internal Directory?
  • Projects, comments or description: everything will migrate, only if you have apps data that are compatible with Cloud and not with Server/Data Center but usually is not the case.

Cheers,

David

Hi David,

Thanks for the response it really helped to plan the activities.

For migration from Cloud to server we are planning to migrate the currently available Nexgen project to Classic project so that the option of taking the server backup gets enabled.

Currently we have followed the below link for conversion, but still we don't see the type change.

Could you please help in conversion the project type and where we could see the project type after conversion.

Thanks

Hi David,

For user management and access control we are planning to integrate JIRA with Active directory.

1. Do we have any inbuilt plugin which could be used for integration.

Related to Projects, comments or description : thanks for the confirmation.

Few more queries,

1. Do we have to migrate the nex-gen project to classic project for doing migration and to take the backup to server as currently we are getting it as grade out.

2.  Do we have any data loss on project if we do the project migration from nexgen to classic project

3. Which is the best approach to do the migration from cloud to server i.e having complete backup and then exporting and importing  or restoring individual project from backup taken.

Hi Lovi, answering your questions:

  1. Even though is not mandatory is recommended, the more common project format to Data Center, the better.
  2. Not in theory, just the inner info from next gen projects like roadmap details.
  3. Better to read this article from Atlassian that explains a lot: https://www.atlassian.com/blog/inside-atlassian/getting-serious-about-cloud-migration

>> We are trying to migrate the cloud to server instead of server to cloud.

Could you please help us with some documentation.

And after conversion do we change just the issue type and mapping of issue status.

Thanks
