Linking issues in JIRA

nagaraju p May 15, 2018

Hi, can anyone help me what is simple scenarios that can work with the below mentioned issues. as i am new here trying to learn it.

  • An issue may relate to another.( when can we use this)
  • An issue may duplicate another.(is it same as cloning the issue)
  • An issue may block another.( should we mention any parameters to block an issue)

Thank you

Hi @nagaraju p,

if you link two issues, you choose a link type. You mentioned three link types above - but you can also create your own link types.

A relation is the most general link type. It doesn't say anything about the relation itself, just that the linked issues have something in common. That's all.

A duplicate link means, that the linked issues cover the same problem, e.g. the same error was reported more than once by different reporters. Usually, you keep only one issue open, link the others to the one left open with the duplicate link and close the other ones immediately. So, if someone looks at a closed issue, she / he can see the link to the open issue.

If you can't work on an issue before another issue is closed, you can use the block-link. But this is just a name. The blocked issue is not blocked at all. It is just a statement for everyone to see, that this issue cannot be worked on until the other one is resolved.
