How to create 'Feature' issue type in between Epic and User Story

Minakshi Sharma May 20, 2022

Hi

In my organization the issue type hierarchy is Epic->Feature->User Story/task. In jira we only have an Epic link to a user story/task. How to create the hierarchical link between the issues and display it. Thanks

Hello, @Minakshi Sharma ! Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Your situation is identical to those organizations that are practicing SAFe, which has that issue type hierarchy.  What those organizations do is one of the following.

  • Use Advanced Roadmaps (bundled with Jira Software Premium) to set up an issue type above Epic and "remap" the Epic issue type to Features (currently on cloud this is mentally mapping it.  There's a feature coming "real soon now" from Atlassian that will allow you to rename Epics to Features)
  • Use a Marketplace app such as Structure for Jira to set up the desired hierarchy.

Hope this helps!

Hi, @Minakshi Sharma. To add to what @Robert Wen_ReleaseTEAM_ said, this article, by @Philip Heijkoop _ALM Works_,  may be worth a read, too.

This structure is not just needed for orgs that practice safe but also for genuine Scrum @ Scale organizations
