We have two developer teams, and therefor two teams to select between when you create an issue and set the custom field Team. We could create two user groups, one per team, and let JIRA set a value for Team when a user creates an issue. The value would depend on which group the user belongs to.
It this be possible or is there a better way to accomplish what we try to?
How do you plan to view the burn-down chart per-team even if you have this custom field?
Also if you want to use the approach to set the Team based on the group of the user that created the issue that means that if a user from Team A create an issue which is for team B it would have wrong team set and you have to manually change it after that.
The right approach should be to have separate boards for each team and then find a solution for the project manager to view the big picture.

Thanks for the links, Boris. Still, is it possible to let JIRA set the default depending on the user's Group?

Certainly. We want to separate the work of the two teams and felt the Team field was the most obvious way. It will give us the opportunity to filter and groom the backlog on a team basis. It will also let us create burn-down charts per team, while letting the project manager see the totals of the two teams.

Would you give more details on how you intend to use the Team field ? Depending on what you're trying to do it may turn out that you don't need such a field at all.
