Epics - Logging Work under them

I'm a bit confused. I created an Epic from GreenHopper and dragged 3 issues into it. I now logged work for the three issues but this work does not get subtracted from the epics estimate. Shouldn't the Epic Estimated Hours be automatically adjusted by these issues logged work or do they not have a parent/child relationship?

Is this the expected behaviour? If it is, then what exactly is the purpose of Epics/why have it so you can drag issues into epics? Is this simply for the label on the issues?

Thanks for any insight! (OnDemand)

As per the answer I received from Atlassian. The relationship between JIRA Epics and Issues is much looser than the relationship between JIRA Issues and Sub-Task, therefore, you cannot track work done for the issues under the parent EPIC. It is more or less usable as the label rather than for the work tracking.
