Edit verus remove status from workflow

I am working with inactive workflow.

when i attempt to edit (modify) a status i see this message : This status is used in other workflows, editing it will affect them.

when i attempt to remove the status i see this message: Are you sure you want to remove the status 'To Do' and delete the related transitions?

what will happen if i remove this status from the inactive workflow i am editing? will other workflows that use this status be affected?

my need is to remove the status from the workflow i am working in and i don't want the other workflow to be affected.

what is the relation between status ans workflow ?

Removing the status will not have any effect on anything other than the workflow you are editing. However, if you edit a status that is used in other workflows it will change for all workflows. If you wanted to say, rename a status, then the proper way to do that, without impacting other workplace is to simply create a new status and remove the old one.
