Edit Epic View in Project Kanban Board

Stan Mcleod February 3, 2021

Hi,

We have two separate projects running on Jira. One "product" and one "engineering".

Once a ticket (issue) has been worked on we pass it to the engineering project. We use Epics as roadmaps items with the product project to contain all of the associated issues. Once the issue passes to the engineering project, it loses its direct relationship with the parent epic. So far so good and works well.

However, I want to to be able to filter the issues by the associated epic link from the product project (which is still attached) in the engineering backlog view. However, when I filter these on the kanban board view, it doesn't show me epics that originated in the product project. It only shows epics that originated in the engineering project and I can only see the epic link in the issue detail view.

Is it possible to configure the epic filter (see screenshot) in the engineering project to reflect the roadmap epics from the product project?

Hello @Stan Mcleod

Welcome to the community.

The Epics that will display in your board are based on the Filter used by your board. If you want to include Epics from another project you will have to modify the filter for the board to include those Epics. If you want only the Epics from the other project that include a story from your project, that is a bit more complex, as there is no built in way to say...

OR "Epic Link" in Project XYZ

If you don't mind including ALL epics from the other project then you could add this to your board filter...

OR (project=XYZ and issueType=Epic)

Hi @Trudy Claspill ,

Yes, happy to include all epics from both projects. It's just a simpler view for me to track and stay on top of the ticket / issue movement.

What are the steps to add this to the board filter?

Hello @Stan Mcleod

  1. Select Board Settings from the ... button in the upper right corner of the board. Board Settings will be available only if you are an Admin specifically for that board.
  2. In the resulting screen there are a list of Settings links. Select General.
  3. In about the middle of the screen there will be a section labeled Filter that shows the name of the Saved Filter used by the board. Under the filter name will be a link for Edit Filter Query. Note if you are not the owner of the filter you will not be able to save modifications to the filter. If you are not the owner, a little farther down the screen it will show you the name of the filter owner.

  4. If you are the owner, click the Edit Filter Query link. This will take you to the Issue Search screen with the Saved Filter loaded.
  5. Modify the filter
  6. Save the modified filter
  7. Refresh your board.
