Creating Features

Ryan Johnson November 20, 2020

Is there a way to create a Jira tree that would look like this? Epic > Feature > Stories?  Is there a way to create Features?  A feature would be a complete working piece of software that could be added to a system, such as table that has filters (dropdowns), checkboxes for batch actions, an action menu, columns with the ability to sort ascending to descending, a secondary search filter, etc. s A feature would be comprised of multiple components of user stories), that can go under a bigger Epic called System Tables/Grids?

Hi @Ryan Johnson

If you're using Advanced Roadmaps (Jira Premium), you can have additional hierarchical levels (eg. Initiative) - see this page.

However, you can't move the Epic issue type from the Epic-level, nor add an additional hierarchical level between Epic and Story-level. There is a suggested enhancement for the latter, see JSWCLOUD-19407

In this instance, I'd consider either:

  • Accepting a level above the Epic as the larger issue type, such as Initiative
  • Placing a Feature above Epic, then a further issue type above that (eg. Program Epic).
    • You could place Story at the same level as Epic in this instance, although you do lose some good Epic-based functionality (Epic panel, Epic reporting, Epic swimlanes, etc)
  • Using an app, such as Structure

Plain Jira only has project-level entities - Epic -> Story -> Sub-task.

But if you add apps such as Structure, Advanced Roadmaps, Jira Align and so-on, they can provide more layers

Thanks! Where do you get those apps?

Hi @Ryan Johnson

These Apps are in various places...

  • Advanced Roadmaps is built-in to Jira Premium or Enterprise
  • Jira Align is a standalone product, check out more details here
  • For third-party Apps like Structure, check-out the Marketplace

However, since this question was asked, the functionality to modify Epic to Feature, and create your required hierarchy, has been announced. But, it's not released yet. Check for updates on this article.
