Create issue in sprint not working correctly

With no changes to project settings (perhaps there's a chance made outside my team that affected us), the create ticket button that appears underneath each sprint (so you can quickly place a ticket in a specific future sprint) no longer works as expected, instead of creating a summary-only ticket in the targeted sprint, it will create it and drop it to the bottom of the backlog.

you can see the sprint is set in that functionality, but it will throw the new ticket at the bottom of the backlog instead. What configurations would control this?

the other interesting thing i've noticed around the same time as this problem cropped up is that sprint is no longer being referenced as "sprint" in issue search, it's being referenced as some unique ID instead...
