Create a read-only custom field in Jira Core Issues

Bunyamin Ozcan May 13, 2019

Dear all,

I want to categorize some inputfields in Jira Issues by adding titles to them within the View and Edit screens. I know about the plugin called JIRA Toolkit Plugin in which you can create custom inputfields called Message Custom Field (for edit) and Message Custom Field (for view) or Text Field (read-only). Somehow none of these custom fields are visible when applying them to a certain schreme even though I can clearly see that I added them to the screens. The rest of my inputfields are visible.

Is the plugin outdated? If so, is there a different way for a solution? Having title's in my issues help categorize the inputfields. I know that I can make tabs as an alternative solution but having it all in one page would be nicer.

I hope someone knows the anwser to my question.

Kind regards,

Hello Bunyamin,

The correct field that you can use to achieve your need is the Message Custom Field (for view). This field will not appear in the Create/Edit screen, but only in the view screen when configured with a valid value.

Since the field can not be set in the Create/Edit screen, you must add a default value to it in order to make it display in your issue view. The steps to do it:

1 - Navigate to JIRA Settings > Issues > Custom Fields

2 - Find the message custom field (For View) you created and click to configure it, in the three dots icon at the right corner.

3 - Click Edit Default Value to set the value you want it to display in the issue view.

Thanks for the reply! Seems I just needed to put the default value in. Alas I can not use it like I wanted though. It displays it like this: "Header: Header". I want to create it as a header for the other input fields that will be diplayed below the Message Custom Field input field.

Is there a way to do this?
