Can't close sprint even though all tickets are in done state

steliosavramidis August 28, 2023

Hello

I created my own "Won't do" state and I have marked it as "Done" state.

However when I am trying to close a sprint Jira doesn't allow me saying that I have tickets open and it points me to an epic where all tickets are in Done or Won't Do state. I have to manually change the Won't do state -> Done -> Close the sprint -> Change it back again.

What's happening?

Hi,

The status is not that important when it comes to the sprint.  The "done" category is totally irrelevant.  The status only matters because the board uses it to determine which column the issue is in on the board.

To complete a sprint, you need to have your stories and all of their sub-tasks in the last (rightmost) column on the board the sprint belongs to.

Jira will let you end the sprint with stories that are not in the last column - they will be rolled into the next sprint, or returned to the backlog.

It can not however deal with stories that are in a quantum superposition-like state - a story that is "done", but still has sub-tasks that are not. (i.e. a story that is done and not-done at the same time).  That's when Jira will tell you it cannot close the sprint - it needs you to tell it whether the story is done or not - either move the story back into a to-do or in-progress status, or get all of its sub-tasks into the last column of the board.

TLDR: check what columns all of your issues and sub-tasks are in on the board for the sprint.

@steliosavramidis @Nic Brough -Adaptavist-

I just discovered this thread today when encountering the same issue Stelio did - except for me it was cancelled subtasks that blocked me from being allowed to close the sprint.

I think the solution is to add the other done status (cancelled or Won't Do in Stelios case) to the Done column in Board Config. Since you probably don't want to clutter the active sprint board with cancelled tickets, you can just exclude the status(es) you don't want to see on the Board from the Board filter.

With that config you it should work :-)
