CSV import - Custom field has a value then trying to import a null value

My company has a supplier that sends us a csv file containing status on issues. Occationally they will send us an update that blanks out a field due to the work they are doing. When we import this csv our project does not update. What can we do to get our Jira project to match what is in the importing csv file?
