Why is Jira automatically copying custom fields when creating a linked issue?

Hello,

I created a custom field called "goal" and for some reason when I set that field on an issue and then created a linked issue, the "goal" field gets copied over into the newly created linked issue. I don't have this set in Jira automation or behavior or any other script that I can think of. It copies over values of the other custom fields, as well. Does anyone have advice on how I can turn this off, since most of the time my liked issues shouldn't have the same field values as the original issue?

Thanks!

Anja

Hi Anja,

More than likely there is an automation rule that runs when the issue is linked. I would investigate that first.

Thanks, John. I checked and there isn't an automation rule. I also don't have any scripting plugins like Scriptrunner installed so it's not coming from there either.

If you look in the History, who does it says is updating the field?

Me. There are only 2 items in the history section of the newly created linked issue: created by me, and link updated by me

Yes it will do that if the fields are associated with the other project. If you don’t want that, then disassociate the field in the other project. If however you want to reuse that field in the other project but have unique values then you could use automation to clear the field once the linked issue was created possibly

Really? I've never encountered that.
Do you mean across to JWM projects made with the same template?

@Anja Brkljacic are these linked issues in another project, or the same one? Also, are there any hints in the history tab of the newly created, linked issues?

@Curt Holley They are in the same project. It happens when I go into an issue and click on the "create linked issue" button from within that issue (the "quick create" linked issue).

Thanks, @Jack Brickey , I'll try to clear the fields with automation

Hi @anja

Did you manage to find a workround?

or maybe find out the reason behind some Custom Fields being copied and others not?

Thanks in advance
