remove Epics on kanban board when marked as done

How can I set up my KANBAN board to NOT display epics as swimlanes, once complete?

Hi John - Welcome to the Community!

Certainly, you can do that. Just go to Board Settings, then choose Swimlanes.

Then modify the JQL for the Swimlane for Epics to include something like issuetype = Epic and status != Done

Let me know if you have problems with it.

What does your JQL look like exactly?

You don't have anything in your filter that controls issue by Epic. So maybe change your board filter to look something like:

project = AC OR (issuetype != Epic AND "Epic Status" != Done)

Hi John!

Thank you! are you referring me changing the quick filters?

I place this query there and it says it does not work because of the OR element.

If you are using it in Quick Filter, just use:

issuetype != Epic AND "Epic Status" != Done

Hi John!

That is what I did before but it hides both done and not done epics for some reason! I created a new epic just to try it and it is still showing all epics and when I click on the "Hide Done Epics" query I get none of them. Maybe because of their status? I still do not understand how to change the status of the Epic. I went to Epic panel on the backlog and clicked marked as done.

So sorry to bother you but really appreciate the help :)

issuetype != Epic or (issuetype = Epic AND "Epic Status" != Done)

Hi @John Funk

Thank you! but It's still not working. I can still see all of the epics as swimlanes instead of the ones that are not done. Is there something I'm missing?

John Funk Community Leader Jan 12, 2021

Can you share some screen shots?

Also, check the Epics that should not be showing up. Make sure the Epic Status = Done and not just the Status. Those are two different fields.

Sure. So when I go to Board Settings and I put the query you sent I placed it in Quick Filters. Those are the ones that I sent you previously with teh addition to the one you sent me for the closed epics.

The only thing I'm not finding is the Epic Status. I already went to check the Epic Panel on board settings so I could see in the backlog easier the Epics. From there I put marked as done to some and those do not appear in the backlog but still appear in the swimlanes. Some of them do not have all issues completed does that affect?

Click on the Edit filter query link in the Board Settings > General

Once you are on the filter, add a column to the filter to display the Epic Status.

Hi John!

Sorry to bother again. I have filtered and for some reason I cannot get to the status. It says that Jira cannot reach that. Is there any way to get to that status?

John Funk Community Leader Jan 13, 2021

Hi Fernanda - you are no bother!

Can you share a screenshot of the filter when you are trying to add the column and are getting an error?

John Funk Community Leader Jan 13, 2021

Ouch - does it do that every time you go to that filter? Can you click on the Switch to JQL to see the code?

When I go to JQL with that query, this is the code that appears:

project = AC AND issuetype = Epic ORDER BY Rank ASC

John Funk Community Leader Jan 14, 2021

Then click on the Columns button and add the Epic Status

Sorry How do I do that? This is so complicated Atlassian should just add a feature to hide done epics.

This is my view. Screen Shot 2021-01-15 at 12.10.28 PM.png

No - from the Filter. Click on the Edit Filter Query link under General. Then add a column on your filter to show Epic Status.

Hi John!

I have tried everything and it does not seem to work. I "marked as done" epics so as to not have them in the Kanban view but I left one not completed. When I put "Hide all done epics" all of them disappear! Please help! I'm filtering by Swimlanes.
