how to add a workflow status

Albert Nkansah January 3, 2022

I have a task tracking template in Jira and am an administrator and would like to add a workflow status in our project, however I do not see that as an option for me. Please advise.

The answer to this depends on what type of project you are in.

If it is a Team-managed project, then the project administrators can go into Project settings -> Board -> manage workflow.

If it is a company managed project, then your Jira administrators will need to edit the workflow, adding your new status into it.

Hello @Albert Nkansah ,

in maximum cases only Jira Administrator can able to edit the existing workflows and Add / Edit statuses to workflows.

only in some cases, all issues types with in the project using same workflow (Simplified Workflow) and having project administrator right, (when only the project permission Extended project administration is enabled to you)

if you have the above scenario, you can go to project settings --> workflows --> edit workflow --> add status --> here you can check from the existing statuses which are already created by Jira admins in past

---------------------------------------

If you are Jira Admin --> you can check the workflow name from project settings ---> workflows --> required workflow name ||

Settings --> issues --> workflows --> try to find the workflow by name from the above --> edit --> do your customization here.

Note: if the workflow is used for multiple issue types within the project or with other projects, you may copy the workflow and apply the changes on the copied workflow. save the changes. and add the modified workflow to the project --> Project settings --> workflow schemes --> add workflow --> "Add existing workflow" --> add for which issue type, then publish the Workflow scheme.

for team managed projects --> https://support.atlassian.com/jira-software-cloud/docs/create-edit-and-delete-statuses-in-team-managed-projects/

please check the above links for your reference based on your project template.

Thanks
