What is the impact of deleting an epic that has many issues associated with it?

i.e. what happens to all the issues associated to the epic.

Do they simply 'float' in the ether without the epic designation?

I want to make sure that when I delete an Epic (from a piece of work that was done 1 year ago where all issues associated with it are closed that the associated issues are also not deleted) ..I just want the epic gone so when I am editing an issue and assigning an epic to it these 'old ones' that are now defunct no longer appear in the dropdown list.

I've tried it and nothing especial happened. Only the Epic Linc hadn't worked any longer as expected, since the parent issue (the Epic) was not longer existent.
