Tracking Project Status with History in Jira: How to?

Rania March 25, 2024

Hey,

Does anyone know how to implement a custom field in Jira to track project status (green, yellow, red) with history?  I need to save changes over time.

For example, if the status changed from yellow in February to another color later, how can that history be preserved

Welcome to the community @Rania

This cannot really be done with a custom field, since custom fields do not support colours. As far as I know, there aren't API's that are made for the card colors.

Since there are a lot of technicalities here, I'd suggest you ask this question in the developer community: https://community.developer.atlassian.com/

Thanks for the info!

I'm okay with using text (e.g., 'green', 'yellow', 'red') instead of colors for the status. The key requirement is tracking the history of status changes. Any suggestions for achieving this within Jira?

In Jira, there isn't really a tracker for the project, there is the tracker for status changes within the issues themselves, and this can be viewed when you click on History section of an issue. Here you can see all of the changes that have been made.

Thank you for the clarification!

Is it possible to filter the History section of an issue in Jira to show changes related to a specific field, or am I limited to viewing the entire history of changes?

In History, besides who changed the the status, which status was changed to which, who added the comment, so yes, with History, you can see the changes that were mentioned previously.

Hi @Rania

If you need to filter changes in a specific field, you can try Issue History for Jira app. It works perfectly to show custom field changes for one issue or a list of issues.

Here is an example with status changes, but you can select any field you need.

The app is developed by my team and offers a free 30-day trial. I suggested it as it can provide a solution to your case. You can find more examples here:

Hi @Rania

As you mentioned the key requirement is to view the issue history, you can try out our add-on for better reporting capabilities and viewing multiple issues history at once,

Issue History Reports

You can view the complete change log for your filtered issues, in a simple and effective way.
