In our jira instance, the issue description does not appear in the new issue view.
In the old view it appears fine.
There are no fields hidden in the Project settings/Issue layout.
Does anyone know what is wrong?

Ok thanks. I was assuming that 'Summary' was the description field and that because it appears in the old view and not in the new that there must be something wrong.

The Summary is the short description/title that you see. The one line of text, and the Description field is the long text.
As the issue layout is only for the new issue view I can see the confusion.

Hey Chris - sorry, just now getting back to this. No, the Summary is basically the card title. But the Description is where you can put lots of text. The Summary is a single line text field and the Description is a multi-line field.
